#Academia: Finding the Ivory Tower

A long-term institutional home for a mathematician who wants pure research, beauty, remoteness, and distance from the 14 Eyes intelligence alliance. Filtered for IAS-archetype institutes, ranked for "call home" fit, and anchored to a realistic path that begins with a US undergraduate degree.

#1. The 14 Eyes Context

The 14 Eyes is an informal SIGINT-sharing pyramid built on the Five Eyes core (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand), extended by the Nine Eyes (adding Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway), and finally the Fourteen Eyes / SIGINT Seniors Europe (adding Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden). Membership implies routine bulk-metadata sharing and legal regimes that compel cooperation with national signals agencies. The filter is not paranoia, it is selection: institutions in 14 Eyes states sit inside legal and infrastructural plumbing that is incompatible with a research life designed to be quiet, sovereign, and outside the dragnet.

The 14 to exclude: US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Sweden.

Adjacent intel partners that are NOT in the 14 Eyes but cooperate via Tier B / SIGINT Seniors Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Thailand. These are not formal 14 Eyes members, so they remain in scope, but they are intelligence-adjacent. Treat them as "non-14 but networked." For most practical purposes (data residency, jurisdictional reach, daily life), they are still substantially freer than 14 Eyes states.

Mexico is excluded by Kris's hard constraint independent of intel posture. Cuba, Iran, and DPRK are sanctioned for US citizens in ways that make practical affiliation enormously difficult, regardless of intel status. Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Iceland, Czech Republic, and Greece are inside Europe but outside the 14 Eyes and frequently overlooked; they form a "European loophole" for the criteria.

#2. Undergraduate: Fully Online Mathematics B.S. Deep Dive

Everything in Sections 3 through 10 assumes Kris already holds (or is finishing) a US-recognized B.S. in Mathematics. This section is the upstream problem: how to acquire that degree from a fixed US address, fully remotely, cheaply, with the right tooling, and ideally with some thread of Oxford adjacency.

The 14 Eyes filter is intentionally suspended for this section. The undergrad is a US-resident operation by definition (Kris is staying in the US during this phase), and the strongest fully-online math degrees happen to be in 14 Eyes jurisdictions (US, UK, South Africa is non-14E, India is non-14E). For graduate study and after, the 14 Eyes filter resumes.

#2.1 Hard requirements (recap)

  1. B.S. in Mathematics with as much pure-math content as the program allows (real analysis, abstract algebra, topology, number theory, complex analysis). Programs that only offer "applied math" coded as data science or business analytics are out.
  2. 100% remote completion possible. Hybrid is insufficient. Even if Kris attends in person initially, the institution must let him finish remotely. Verified per program below.
  3. Recognized accreditation such that the degree is accepted for US graduate-school applications. In the US this means regional accreditation (HLC, SACSCOC, MSCHE, WSCUC, NEASC, NWCCU). In the UK this means a UK-recognized degree-awarding body. Internationally this is checked against WES / ECE evaluability.

#2.2 Nice-to-haves (researched in detail below)

  • Lifetime @institution.edu (or equivalent) inbox, not a forwarder.
  • Free hosted academic page (mathematics.school.edu/~kris style) while enrolled and as alumni.
  • Tooling: GitHub Student Pack, Azure for Students, AWS, GCP, Wolfram, MATLAB TAH, JetBrains, Cursor, Notion, Overleaf Pro, Figma.
  • Oxford adjacency. Bodleian access, OUDCE certificate enrollment in parallel, visiting-student exchanges, or anything else that legitimately puts Kris near Oxford resources during the undergrad years.

#2.3 Tier 1 programs: detailed profiles

Each profile answers the same five questions: (a) is the full B.S. in Mathematics deliverable 100% online with zero residency, (b) how much pure math is in the actual curriculum, (c) total tuition for a US citizen, (d) accreditation status, (e) lifetime email / hosting / tooling posture.

#2.3.1 University of Florida Online: B.S. Mathematics

  • Accreditation: SACSCOC (regional, top tier).
  • Residency requirement: None. UF Online is fully online with no campus visits required for the math B.S.
  • Pure-math content: UF's online catalog mirrors the on-campus B.S. requirements. Real Analysis (MAA 4226 or MAA 4211/4212), Abstract Algebra (MAS 4301/4302), Topology (MTG 4302), Complex Analysis (MAA 4402), Number Theory (MAS 4203). UF is one of the few online programs with the full pure sequence available on-demand.
  • Total tuition for a Florida resident: roughly $130 per credit, ~$15,500 for 120 credits. For non-Florida residents, UF Online charges a reduced out-of-state rate: about $500 per credit, ~$60,000 for 120 credits. Worth pricing residency options if Kris is willing to establish Florida residency.
  • Lifetime email: UF gives a @ufl.edu GatorMail while enrolled and a forwarding @ufl.edu after graduation through the "ForUFL" service. Full mailbox access ends ~1 year post-graduation, but the address itself is retained as a forwarder for life. UF alumni status is permanent.
  • Hosting: UF CISE provides home directories for CS majors; math majors generally do not get hosting accounts by default. There is no widely advertised ~username hosting for math undergrads.
  • Tooling: UF site licenses Mathematica, MATLAB (TAH), SAS, SPSS, Microsoft Office. Free Adobe Creative Cloud was historically available; check current state. UF @ufl.edu qualifies for GitHub Student Pack, Azure for Students, JetBrains, Notion, Cursor for students.
  • Oxford adjacency: None institutional. SCONUL Access does not extend to Florida-based undergrads.
#2.3.2 Open University (UK): BSc (Honours) Mathematics (Q31)

  • Accreditation: UK degree-awarding body recognized by the Privy Council. Globally accepted. WES-evaluable.
  • Residency requirement: None. OU has been the world's reference distance university since 1969. No residential element required for the Q31 honours.
  • Pure-math content: Strong. The Q31 includes Pure Mathematics (M208 sequence), Analysis (M337 Complex Analysis), Number Theory (M303), Linear Statistical Modelling and Optimization options, Group Theory and Galois Theory via M303, and a final-year project. M208 + M303 + M337 is a competitive pure-math core by international standards.
  • Total tuition for an "international" student (Kris from the US): OU charges international/EU students higher fees. As of the 2025/26 cycle, full BSc fees for international distance students are about £6,924 per stage (60 credits/stage = part-time year). Six stages part-time = about £41,500.   • For a US student paying out of pocket and no UK government loan eligibility, total cost ranges $50,000 to $60,000 USD depending on exchange rate and pace.
  • Lifetime email: OU gives firstname.lastname@open.ac.uk while studying. Alumni do not automatically retain @open.ac.uk accounts. The OU Alumni Association issues alumni cards but no permanent email.
  • Hosting: None institutional.
  • Tooling: OU students get Microsoft Office 365 (with @open.ac.uk email), and @open.ac.uk is .ac.uk so it qualifies for GitHub Student Pack, JetBrains, Azure for Students, Notion, Cursor for students. Wolfram and MATLAB depend on OU's current site licenses; OU runs Maxima and SageMath in coursework and has historically provided MATLAB site access for relevant courses.
  • Oxford adjacency: Weak but real. SCONUL Access lets UK university students apply for reciprocal access to other UK academic libraries, including the Bodleian's reading rooms in some categories. OU undergrads are eligible for SCONUL Band A or B depending on level. This does not extend to Bodleian's restricted collections or remote SOLO database access, but it does mean an OU student who travels to Oxford can apply for a Bodleian reader card via the SCONUL route, which is the cheapest legitimate door into the Bodleian as a non-Oxford-member. #2.3.3 University of London (UoL) International Programmes: BSc Mathematics and Economics, BSc Data Science and Business Analytics

  • Academic direction: London School of Economics (LSE) for the Math and Economics route; Goldsmiths or Royal Holloway depending on program.
  • Accreditation: University of London is a federal university with degree-awarding powers. The degree certificate reads "University of London" and lists the lead college.
  • Residency requirement: None. Designed for distance learners since 1858.
  • Pure-math content: The "Mathematics and Economics" route includes Calculus, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis (MT2116 Abstract Mathematics, MT3041 Advanced Mathematical Analysis), and selected pure options. It is not a pure-math degree, it is a math + econ blend. There is no stand-alone "BSc Mathematics" pure-track in the current UoL distance catalog. This is a significant limitation. For Kris (pure-math priority) this is a second-tier fit.
  • Total tuition: International students pay around £6,300 to £8,500 total for the full BSc (extremely cheap by US standards) for the standard fee route. Source: https://london.ac.uk/applications/how-it-works/fees
  • Lifetime email: No automatic lifetime @london.ac.uk for distance program alumni.
  • Hosting: None institutional.
  • Tooling: @london.ac.uk student emails do qualify for most vendor student programs (GitHub, Azure, JetBrains, Cursor). Verify on enrollment.
  • Oxford adjacency: SCONUL Access (Band B/C) extends to UoL distance students with proof of enrollment. Same caveat as OU: physical reading-room access at Oxford requires showing up.
#2.3.4 University of South Africa (UNISA): BSc with Mathematics major

  • Accreditation: Council on Higher Education (CHE), South Africa. Internationally recognized; WES-evaluable.
  • Residency requirement: None. UNISA is the world's largest open-distance university by enrollment (~370,000 students).
  • Pure-math content: Strong. UNISA's mathematics syllabus (MAT modules) covers real and complex analysis, abstract algebra, topology, number theory, differential geometry. Faculty is research-active. UNISA was where Riad Masri, Charles Wessell, and others have taught.
  • Total tuition for a US citizen: UNISA charges international students roughly $1,500 to $2,500 per year total. Full BSc completion: roughly $5,000 to $8,000 USD across 3 years. This is by far the cheapest accredited fully-online BSc Math option that is academically serious.
  • Lifetime email: UNISA issues studentnumber@mylife.unisa.ac.za while enrolled. Alumni do not automatically retain it.
  • Hosting: None.
  • Tooling: @mylife.unisa.ac.za is generally accepted by GitHub Student Pack, Azure for Students, JetBrains, Notion. Some vendors flag non-.edu and non-.ac.uk addresses, so individual approval is case-by-case. Wolfram Alpha Pro for Students typically accepts UNISA emails.
  • Oxford adjacency: None.
  • US grad-school caveat: WES will evaluate a UNISA BSc as equivalent to a US BSc. However, admissions committees at top US grad programs may apply extra scrutiny to a non-US, non-UK, distance-only degree. The math is real; the prestige perception varies. UNISA produces published mathematicians; that record is the best counter to the perception issue.
#2.3.5 Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU): BSc with Mathematics

  • Accreditation: UGC India, NAAC A++. Recognized internationally; WES will evaluate.
  • Residency requirement: None for the BSc General program; some IGNOU programs have local-study-center requirements that do not apply abroad.
  • Total tuition: Approximately ₹14,000 for the entire 3-year BSc (~$170 USD total). This is the absolute floor of cost.
  • Pure-math content: The BSc-General with Math major covers calculus, real analysis, algebra, linear algebra, complex analysis, differential equations, mathematical modeling. Less depth than UNISA in pure topology and abstract algebra at honors level.
  • US grad-school recognition: WES evaluates IGNOU degrees, but admissions committees at competitive US PhD programs do discount IGNOU on average. This is the honest answer. The credential is real; the prestige perception is weakest of the Tier 1 list.
  • Lifetime email, hosting, tooling: Minimal. IGNOU does not reliably issue @ignou.ac.in student email; many students operate with personal Gmail.
  • Verdict: Only competitive on price. Use as a cheap supplemental credential, not a primary US-grad-track BSc.
#2.3.6 Arizona State University Online: B.S. in Mathematics

  • Accreditation: HLC (regional).
  • Residency requirement: None.
  • Pure-math content: Real Analysis I (MAT 371), Abstract Algebra I (MAT 444), Topology (MAT 472), Complex Analysis (MAT 475), Number Theory (MAT 419). Available online via ASU Online. ASU's online math program is one of the most complete pure-math options among large US online programs.
  • Tuition: Out-of-state online rate ~$561 to $661 per credit, total ~$67,000 to $79,000 for 120 credits. Higher than UF.
  • Lifetime email: ASU offers @asu.edu mailbox to current students and @asualumni.asu.edu to alumni; the @asu.edu address is retained as a Google Workspace forwarder indefinitely. ASU has historically been generous with retained Gmail accounts for alumni.
  • Tooling: ASU site-licenses MATLAB TAH, Mathematica, Maple, full Microsoft and Adobe suites. @asu.edu qualifies for everything.
  • Oxford adjacency: None directly. ASU has a partnership with King's College London ("ASU + King's College London") but not Oxford.
#2.3.7 Indiana University East: B.S. in Mathematics (online)

  • Accreditation: HLC.
  • Residency: None.
  • Pure-math content: Real Analysis (MATH M413), Abstract Algebra (MATH M403), Linear Algebra (MATH M301), Number Theory (MATH M380), Complex Variables (MATH M312). The IU East online B.S. Math is one of the longest-running pure-track-friendly online math degrees in the US (running since 2008).
  • Tuition: Out-of-state online ~$346 per credit, total ~$41,500 for 120 credits. Very competitive.
  • Lifetime email: IU offers permanent @alumni.iu.edu and IU has historically been generous with retained @iu.edu access. IU is one of the better US schools for lifetime email continuity.
  • Tooling: IU site licenses Maple, Mathematica, MATLAB, plus Microsoft and Adobe. @iu.edu qualifies for all student programs.
  • Oxford adjacency: None directly.

  • Tuition: ~$364 per credit for online, ~$44,000 total.
  • Lifetime email: UIS issues @uis.edu; alumni access policy is less generous than IU.
#2.3.9 Oregon State University Ecampus: B.S. Mathematics

  • Tuition: ~$361 per credit, ~$43,000 total.
  • Lifetime email: @oregonstate.edu retained for alumni (Google Workspace).
  • Tooling: Full OSU site licenses including MATLAB TAH, Mathematica.
#2.3.10 Penn State World Campus: B.S. options (no pure BS Math fully online)

  • As of 2026, Penn State World Campus does not offer a fully online B.S. in Mathematics. They offer a B.A. in Letters, Arts and Sciences with math content, and an online B.S. in Data Sciences. The pure-math B.S. is on-campus only.
  • Penn State @psu.edu lifetime email is one of the best in US higher ed; alumni keep @psu.edu Gmail indefinitely.
  • Verdict for Kris: skip unless plans change.
#2.3.11 University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC): B.S. Math: not offered
  • UMGC offers degrees in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Computer Networks. No B.S. in Mathematics. Skip.
#2.3.12 Western Governors University (WGU)
  • WGU is competency-based, accredited (NWCCU), and known for B.S. in IT, business, and education. No B.S. in Mathematics is offered. WGU offers a B.S. in Math Education (teacher prep). Not a research-mathematics BSc. Skip.
#2.3.13 SUNY Empire State College: Individualized Studies with Mathematics concentration

  • Accreditation: MSCHE.
  • Residency: None.
  • Empire State allows the student to define an individualized degree with a mathematics concentration. This is not a guaranteed-curriculum B.S. Math; it's a B.S. where Kris would have to assemble a credible upper-division pure-math sequence himself (potentially by transferring in StraighterLine / Study.com / community-college credits and combining with Empire State's own offerings, which are thin on pure math).
  • Tuition: ~$363 per credit out-of-state online. Total ~$43,500.
  • Use case: prior-learning-assessment heavy candidates who already have lots of credit can finish here fast. Not ideal for someone starting from zero who wants a rigorous pure-math sequence.
#2.3.14 Athabasca University: Bachelor of Science (Mathematics major)

  • Accreditation: Province of Alberta, Canada (Athabasca is a public Canadian university with full degree-granting authority); recognized internationally and WES-evaluable.
  • Residency: None.
  • Pure-math content: Real Analysis (MATH 376/476), Linear Algebra II, Abstract Algebra (MATH 365/465), Topology (MATH 471), Complex Variables (MATH 376). Good pure-math depth.
  • Tuition: International student rate ~CAD $1,200 per 3-credit course; full B.S. ~CAD $42,000 (~$31,000 USD).
  • Lifetime email: Athabasca issues @athabasca.edu (formerly @learn.athabascau.ca) and offers an alumni @my.athabascau.ca. Lifetime email retention is not guaranteed; verify with current Athabasca alumni services.
  • Tooling: GitHub Student Pack accepts Athabasca emails.
#2.3.15 Colorado State University Global: no pure math BS
  • CSU Global offers business analytics and applied data, no B.S. Mathematics. Skip.
#2.3.16 University of the People: no math BS

  • Tuition: ~$120 per course assessment fee; full BSc ~$3,500 total. Cheapest US-accredited online option in absolute terms.
  • However: UoPeople does not offer a B.S. in Mathematics. Programs are Business, CS, Health Science, Education. Skip unless plans change.
#2.3.17 Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Online: B.A. Mathematics
  • SNHU offers a B.A. (not B.S.) in Mathematics fully online. Curriculum is mid-tier; pure-math depth is weaker than ASU/OSU/IU East. Tuition $320 per credit, ~$38,400 total.
  • Verdict: cheap and accessible but pure-math depth is the weakest of the credible US options.
#2.3.18 Liberty University Online: B.S. Mathematics

  • Liberty does offer an online B.S. Mathematics. Tuition is reasonable (~$390 per credit).
  • Flag: Liberty is a private evangelical Christian institution with mandatory doctrinal statements students must affirm, and a politicized administration. Per the user's filter (no Christian / political / ideological universities), Liberty is excluded. Listed here only to acknowledge it exists in the search space.
#2.3.19 Mercy College, Bellevue University, Excelsior College
  • Mercy: B.S. Math is on-campus only. No online option.
  • Bellevue: B.S. Math is not in their catalog (they offer Data Science, Cybersecurity).
  • Excelsior University (formerly Excelsior College): offers a "Liberal Arts with Mathematics concentration" online but not a dedicated B.S. Mathematics. Excelsior is one of the "Big 3" credit aggregators (see Section 2.5).

#2.5 Transfer-in routes and the "Big 3" accelerators

The cheapest and fastest path to an accredited US B.S. Math is not to enroll directly. It is to accumulate ~60–90 credits via cheap third-party providers and then transfer those credits into a program that maximally accepts them. The infrastructure:

Credit-by-exam providers (cheap, accelerated):

  • CLEP (College Board): https://clep.collegeboard.org/, $93 per exam, covers calculus, college algebra, precalculus, college mathematics. Each exam = 3 credits typically.
  • DSST (Prometric/DANTES): https://www.getcollegecredit.com/, similar to CLEP, $100 per exam.
  • Saylor Academy (https://www.saylor.org/), free courses, $25 proctored exam, ACE-credit-recommended. Covers calculus, real analysis I, abstract algebra at low cost. Acceptance varies.
  • Study.com (https://study.com/), ~$200/mo, transcripts via ACE. Math courses include college algebra, precalculus, calculus, linear algebra, abstract algebra.
  • StraighterLine (https://www.straighterline.com/), ~$99/mo + $59 per course. Calculus, statistics, linear algebra.
  • Sophia Learning (https://www.sophia.org/), $99/mo unlimited courses, ACE-credit. Up to 30 credits/year possible.
  • Modern States Education Alliance (https://modernstates.org/), free CLEP prep + free exam voucher. Use this to take CLEP exams essentially for free.

The Big 3 credit aggregators: institutions that accept enormous amounts of external credit and let you finish a B.S. with relatively little in-house coursework.

  • Thomas Edison State University (TESU), https://www.tesu.edu/, accepts unlimited CLEP/DSST, up to 80 credits via prior learning assessment. Their B.A. in Mathematics is fully online; B.S. is also offered. Tuition for residency-only "comprehensive" rate is around $9,000/yr for in-state, ~$15,000 for out-of-state per year, plus per-credit transfer evaluation fees.
  • Excelsior University, https://www.excelsior.edu/, similar model. Their "Liberal Arts with Math concentration" is the available online offering for math content.
  • Charter Oak State College (Connecticut), https://www.charteroak.edu/, accepts CLEP, DSST, and ACE-credit. B.S. with Math concentration.

The accelerated stack model:

  1. Spend 6–12 months at $99/mo on Sophia + StraighterLine + Saylor + Study.com. Knock out 30–60 lower-division credits at total cost under $2,500.
  2. Take 8–10 CLEP/DSST exams via Modern States vouchers, mostly free.

Honest assessment. The "remote affiliate from US undergrad" path is not a standard product anywhere. The realistic plan is: do a summer school or short visit at the target institute as an undergrad, publish or collaborate with someone there, enroll for PhD or postdoc and then leverage alumni / external-faculty status afterward. The institutional concept of "I am a US undergrad who wants library access to your institute" is not on offer at any of these places. Banking note. US citizens face FATCA reporting in every foreign country, which makes some local banks refuse to open accounts. Wise, Revolut, and similar fintech rails cover the gap. Russia and Iran cut US cards off entirely post-2022.

Honorable mentions just below the top 5: KAUST (extraordinary funding, Red Sea, but social constraints in Saudi Arabia are a meaningful "call home" cost); Weizmann (perfect culturally but Israel's geopolitical exposure is non-trivial); Yau Mathematical Sciences Center, Tsinghua (excellent for math but China carries personal-information-environment costs Kris already filters against by avoiding 14 Eyes); Bariloche / Instituto Balseiro (beauty rating 10/10 but the institutional charter is more teaching-heavy than the IAS archetype).

#10. Building the Ivory Tower Remotely

Independent of any single institution: the deeper plan is to construct the scholarly home Kris wants regardless of affiliation. This is the independent scholar tradition. It has a real history:

  • Grothendieck after 1991 left IHES, settled in Lasserre, and continued writing thousands of pages of unpublished manuscript ("Récoltes et Semailles," "La Clef des Songes") with no institutional support. Affiliation, in the end, was incidental to his work.
  • Perelman declined affiliations and prizes; lived in St. Petersburg with his mother during the years he proved the Poincaré conjecture.

The practical components Kris already has in place or can build:

  • Personal homelab as research infrastructure. STARGATE is a real asset. A 1 TB shared compute store, Jupyter behind Tailscale, sage / mathlib / Lean infrastructure, plus arxiv mirrors, gives an independent scholar a working environment that 90% of university researchers do not have.
  • Private library. Buy books. Hard copies. A 2000-volume math library is acquirable over 20 years for the price of one mid-tier car.
  • Reading-group networks. Mathematicians work in tiny correspondence circles. The number of people anywhere on Earth who care about whatever subfield Kris ends up in will be under 50. Their email addresses are public. Read their papers, send corrections, propose problems.
  • Posting under your own name. A maintained domain (krisyotam.com) with research notes, expository pieces, and worked problems is, over a decade, more durable signal than most CVs. Tao did this. Lurie does this with Kerodon. Cao Ye does this in Chinese-language math blogging.
  • The arXiv is the actual institution. Affiliation matters for arXiv only in the sense of needing an initial endorsement. Once endorsed, the arXiv is the real publication infrastructure of mathematics, and it is jurisdictionally American but institutionally autonomous.
  • One real affiliation, used lightly. The goal of the institutional shopping above is to acquire one working affiliation that gives library access (JSTOR, MathSciNet, SpringerLink), an .edu-equivalent email, and a backstop for the rare moments when a formal letter is needed. OIST, IST Austria, AIMS-SA, and Weizmann are the best four for this combined purpose. The Ivory Tower in the long run is the homelab + the library + the network + the lightest possible institutional veneer.

The strategic move during US undergrad: target OIST's Research Internship Program for one summer, an AIMS structured Master's lecture-block visit for another, and apply to STIAS later for a fellowship. Build relationships, accumulate co-authorship, and let one of these institutions become the place where the PhD lands. Then, after the PhD, use alumni affiliation to maintain library and email access while living wherever the work is best done, Patagonia, Okinawa, Akademgorodok, or a cabin in interior Alaska.
